My friend Barb just finished a grad degree at UCLA. Got job at ME-Farmington. How rude awakening is she in for?

Here in Maine we have four real seasons and they are all beautiful.

Farmington has no suburb like Hollywood.

Did you really just post here to downplay Maine? The superiority complex in California is already plentiful.

Farmington is a nice little mountain town. Here in the mountains of Maine we have a thing called snow. Cold white stuff that falls from the sky in late autumn and all winter long. It might take her a while to get used to that.

I'm a lifelong Bay Stater, so I am INTIMATELY familiar with snow. Barbara hasn't been in a cold environment, so I expect culture shock.

If "Barb" is a product of California and their school system, it sounds like culture shock will be almost terminal. At best wonderful Maine is a rural state with pockets of some suburban living with a tiny portion of city life here and there. Maine is the antithesis of California. You didn't say what business she would be working or for so how her clothes will fit into that town and job are an unknown but suffice it to say that there will be a difference. You can still be stylish for sure. Just know that most people in Maine will be more familiar with Carhart, Cabelas, and LLBean than Yves St Laurent or stuff from Nordstrom's. For that type of shopping she'll become friends with her UPS or FedEx man. Many of us reading this forum, however, dream of the day we will be finally moved to that most welcoming and drop-dead gorgeous state with all of it's seasons and moose and black flies.

The last time I sat with Californians and was asked about where we were from, we replied "Connecticut". The educated people there rubbed their chins and seriously asked me "where abouts is Connecticut". No kidding. If 'Barb' would not pass the question asked by Jay Leno on "Jay Walking", she'll be in for a rude awakening.

Want to see a movie that really does depict life in Maine? Have her watch "Welcome to Mooseport" :

Welcome to Mooseport (2004) - IMDb

......then she'll get the picture!

Rome

She'll be working in the ME-Farmington admissions. She specifically wanted to come there because she wants to increase diversity in higher Ed.

Barbara will be back in California in less than 2 years, I guarantee it.

Are you sure she didn't get misdirected at the south New York and Massachusetts path? "Diversity" is least existent in Maine.

Correct, which is precisely WHY she wants to work there.
