Mama bears tend to den up within a few miles of high traffic roads. The reason is road kill. Animals hit by vehicles tend to go as far as possible from the road. They die of injuries and freeze solid. When the weather warms up and the animal begins to thaw. the mama bear catches the scent and thinks, "ah, breakfast." Bears will move out of their dens earlier than usual this year.
They've been coming out of hibernation for about two weeks. I don't know what they're finding to eat but they're leaving scat so they've found something.
