We currently live in NJ but are considering a move to Maine. The expense of NJ living is just too great. My son will be 18 soon and is severely autistic. He may need a residential program eventually and we were wondering what is available for him? Day programs would be very good as well. NJ has good programs but we have other children and it is too costly. Thanks.
Keep in mind, Maine may be cheaper but that's because most jobs here pay about 60% of what they pay in NJ; you'll also notice not everything is going to be cheaper. Heating costs, gasoline and food prices come to mind.
Penquis CAP has a good program. My wife used to be special education director in our large school system of multiple towns. Penquis CAP is Penobscot Piscataquis Community Action Program. They have a fleet of vehicles, most of which have wheelchair lifts to move people to where they need to go. It is not just for handicapped people. Anybody can use their services.
Penquis CAP installs ramps on homes, insulates homes, replaces inefficient homes and even replaces furnaces for low income people. Similar programs can be found all over Maine.
