I heard this story on All Things Considered last night, and was going to post a link. If you look above the printed story, there's a link to the audio. It's a very good story, and I'm glad to see that the road/bridge issue is drawing the national attention it deserves.

Same old story for the State actually. Every 2 years the state asks for millions in funds to fix the roads and bridges and every time the bond issues pass with flying colors. What I want to know is if the smallest amount the voters approved was 33.1 Million with 158 Million in matching funds in 2005, what is the state doing with it all?

2007: 113 Million bond w/260.5 Million matching federal funds - passed June 2007
2005: 33.1 million bond w/158 Million matching federal funds - passed Nov 2005
2003: 63.45 Million bond w/217 Million in matching federal funds - passed Nov 2003
2001: 61 Million bond w/120.8 million in matching federal funds - passed Nov 2001

There are more, it is just discouraging to look them up (Bureau of Corporations, Elections & Commissions, Elections Division) because they are just going to ask for more and we are just going to give it to them without asking what happened to the other millions and millions we have voted for them. Last one was using the fact that some roads haven't been fixed for 10+ years, I wish somebody could tell me what they are doing with it all.

After a rough winter a few years ago, one of our major thoroughfares was almost all hole and very little road surface - it was like driving off-road. A church's outdoor sign got my attention. It said...

"The Road of Life Has Potholes Too
Jesus Paves"

Well he needs to get a job with the Maine DOT because those boys don't pave much right now.

I think it's time to go back to dirt roads. Outside of the dust in the summer they're easy to maintain. Just run the grader over them every once in a while and you're good to go!
If they stopped salting the concrete bridges they'd last longer too! Plain sand works just as well when it's icy. Then scrape off the ice when it's sunny.
