Hi, Next June I will be retiring and we will then start living in Maine from Nov.to April and Anchorage AK from May to Nov. (We are not hot weather people) When we are in Maine we will be living on Drakes Island in Wells. I have been going there all my life and my father has been going there since 1928! Back in 1957 my folks pinched every penny of a Postman's salary and bought a tiny cabin on a nice lot on D.I. Through the years we rented and worked on it and now it where we will spend our winters. We have spent the last 35 years in upstate NY, near VT so we are quite used to cold, snowy winters. I love walking a winter beach. This being said, I also love to swim and work out in water. Over the last two years swimming and walking has helped me lose 50lbs and start to get back into shape. I would really love to continue swimming once I move to Maine. Does anyone know a place near Wells where I could join to go swimming? Perhaps a YMCA, School or health club. Thanks in advance for any advice. D

I don't know of one directly though you'll find that many of the Holiday Inns and such that have pools open them up for locals for a moderate fee in winter. Their business is way down in the winter so they make the cost of maintaining the pool this way. My brother used to pay a fee to use the pool at the Holiday Inn in Waterville when he lived there.

I have seen many brave souls ( Polar Bear Club type members) and various surfers in protective gear swimming in Maine in the OCEAN in the winter!!!
