I have paid the deposit to rent an apartment in Columbia. But on second thought, I'm now thinking of renting an apartment in Ellicott City. The rent for the apartment in Columbia is $150 more than the one in Ellicott City.

The exact location is the most important thing. Where are you looking in Columbia? Chatham Gardens is right off of Rt 40, a major commercial strip, so it's not exactly a bucolic location. But the residential neighborhood right next to it is very nice and would great for walks and biking. And having a grocery store withing easy walking distance could be a plus. The schools are very good.

Columbia is slightly more upscale than EC. EC has a larger Korean and ethnic population. I liked both, but found myself spending all of my free time on the weekends in DC. So, depends what you're looking for. I rented from Kaiser Park off Route 40 and liked it until the roach infestation.
