most rednecks and hillbillies are actually proud people. It only becomes offensive if someone that is neither one of those brought it up. Kinda like when blacks call each other the "N word", it's all good, but when someone who isn't black says it, it becomes offensive.
I've heard these "locals" call people Mexicans and Indians just because they didn't look Appalachian.
