Hello everyone,
I'm taking a leap of faith and moving to Maryland with 2 children. I am a single parent so I need to find something very inexpensive, but not in the hood. I have friends that live in Columbia so I don't want to go more than an hour away from there. Please help me.

Need more information- what is "inexpensive"? What ages are the children? Toddlers? Teenagers? Any activities they like to do or need to be around? Do you want to be closer to a certain religion or ethnicity of people etc?

The kids are in elementary and high school. I currently live in SC where rent on a 2 bedroom apt is $625. Thats inexpensive to me, however, I am from NY so then inexpensive would be somewhere around $800/ $850. Is there such thing in MD? And like I said, I don't want to be more than an hour away from Columbia. I hope I'm not asking for too much.

None of the other stuff matters too much to me. My children are in dance and gymnastics but I can find that just about anywhere. We are African American and Hispanic but I don't need to live in a "black" community, however, if that's where my price range is at so be it. I just don't want to live in the hood.

$800 is pretty low in the DC metro area. Beware of things that sound too good to be true because often you'll find a lot of real estate scams (pay the deposit first, get key later) kind of things in this price range (i.e. just enough to make it worthwhile to the crook, and too little for the cops to make a big fuss about).

Do you have an idea where you might be working, or where the concentration of jobs are for your skills?

I'm a paralegal. This is kind of spur of the moment so where I work isn't a factor right now. I just need to know where I should go or start looking from people who know the state.

I think that probably Sykesville/Eldersburg area might be a place to at least look at. A little south of Sykesville you have West Friendship which is only 20 mins from Ellicott City. It's a starting point on the compass, anyway. Good luck!

Doesn't exist in MD...

What makes you want to move to MD anyway?

Sure it does. You'll just be in the middle of nowhere though. Northern Carroll, Baltimore counties etc. They'd be within an hour of Columbia- depending on time of day/traffic though

Let me rephrase that... "Doesn't exist within reasonable commuting distance of any solid job market..."

$850/month for a 2 bedroom is terribly terribly low for MD...
