Hi,

I'm considering a job in Hanover and I'm thinking of moving to Quincy for it.

I'm figuring Quincy has a bit of a city feel without being too overwhelming. I'd like a place where I can have a small yard room for both my cars, and not pay an absurd amount of money. I'd also like to live in an area where things are going on, there are plenty of restaurants, and that's close to Boston. I don't think Hanover has that.

Given my wants, does Quincy sound like a fitting choice?

Now on to my original question. It would be a "reverse" commute, but I'd imagine I'd still have to contend with traffic. My current commute has absolutely no traffic.

Google Maps says it's about 29 minutes from Hanover to Wollaston/North Quincy. If I recall, last time I was there, it took me about 12 minutes to get to Rte 3 Braintree split. Is it really gonna take 17 minutes for the remaining 3 or 4 miles going through Quincy?

I really don't like traffic - is this going to be an annoyance I'd have to deal with?

That's a lot of words for a simple question.

Quincy is likely the best bet for what you describe, but I'd go with South Quincy/Quincy Center instead of Wollaston/North Quincy. You'd be able to get on the highway at the split (near the Quincy Adams T). There is no actual exit for Rt 3 there, but when getting on the highway, you u-turn at the Quincy-Adams parking garage and there's a Rt 3 ramp from there (or get on Burgin Parkway to get to Rt. 3 if closer to Quincy Ctr).

I lived in that area when I lived in Quincy, my roommate worked in Rockland and that's what he would do. His commute was easy: only about 15-20 min.

Awesome thanks! I had heard good things about Wollaston, which is I was thinking about that area. I'll add Quincy center to my list of places to check out.

Getting from Hanover from Wollaston/North Quincy is relatively easy, depending on what time of the day you'd be traveling. Rte. 3 is a more-or-less straight shot if you follow Newport Ave. all the way down to Burgin Parkway, then follow Burgin to the Quincy Adams T station. It does get dicey during regular commuter rush hours, but if you're going to be traveling against the traffic, it shouldn't be too bad -- maybe 20 minutes if you're lucky hitting all green lights?

You might not find reasonably priced apartments in Hanover. You will probably be able to find newer units for the same price in Quincy.

The highway going northbound is always jammed in the afternoon. There is a considerable volume of people on the reverse commute. It is a full scale commute. Plus, the highway has 2 less lanes going north in the afternoon.

I would go to Braintree or southern Quincy to avoid the Southeast Distressway.

Even better would be Hingham for you. The drive is not unreasonable to Hanover at all.

Bill

Thanks for the advice.

One thing is that I really like the idea of being able to walk to the T. That'd limit where I could be in Braintree and Hingham only has a commuter rail.

I can stay at a friends house for a week or two to try out the northbound commute in the afternoon, but it's always nice to get some opinions of people who routinely do it.

The worst part about that commute would probably getting on the highway in Quincy as the traffic can be heavy there but once you get on the highway it should be ok. I used to live in Quincy and it is nice because you are still near Boston if you want to go out but you do have easy access to the highway also for travelling south. There are some great restaurants in Quincy too.
