We are interested in getting outside this weekend and it seems like good hiking can be found at Blue Hills Reservation.

- Having hiked nowhere near Boston yet, is this a decent choice?

- Do you have a favorite loop/out-and-back at this park (I'm thinking 4-5 hours...)?

- What summit can you best see the Boston skyline from? Great Blue, Chickatawbut....?

Thanks for any tips! Also, can these trails be done in sneakers or are boots recommended?

(PS: I am using this map as a trail reference)

1. It is the best hike you will find that close to Boston.

2. Park at the State Police barracks lot (near Houghton's Pond) and take the Skyline Trail loop to the top of Great Blue (probably there on the north trail and back on the south trail). That trail will be marked in blue on the maps and on the actual trail markings.

3. Great Blue has the best view (highest point and an observation tower for an almost 360 panorama).

Sneakers should be OK unless there is mud or snow present (this is not the Presidentials here).

I agree with Massnative, that is a great choice for hiking around Boston and the area. Well marked trails. I have not been there in a few years. Good reminder

If anyone is hiking the Blue Hills or Houghton Pond area tomorrow or over the weekend, I hope you'll keep an eye out for a basset hound named Jake, who got away from his owner this afternoon. We saw her searching and we spotted him on the green dot trail near the small pond at the north side of the reservation but he ran. We searched and searched until it got dark with no luck. She says he responds to his name or "Come Jake" and that her cell number is on his tags. Thank you!!

This was a great place to go over the weekend. I'm glad that I did wear boots for the chillier temps and for some extra ankle protection on the rocky red dotted trails.

I did not see any loose dogs so I hope Jake was found.
