My husband and I are looking at a house in Maynard and wanted to know how downtown/Summer St area is? The house is near Summer St-are there sidewalks on the road?-we forgot to look at the time.
We are hearing Maynard will have new shops/new things/facelift to downtown...is this a family friendly neighborhood?-very important to us. It is a big decision and we want to make sure Maynard is the right choice for us-THANKS

Check out Google Streetview to see sidewalks, etc. Maynard is considered safe and family friendly, if a bit "down at the heels" by Metrowest standards which allows it to continue to be affordable. It has a cute downtown with some stuff going on, and a decent if middle-aged arts scene. Maybe someone with kids in the schools can chime in. I had a friend who moved there from Arlington and they love it, her kids were about to enter school but they were on the fence about sending them to Maynard public schools.

I have a friend that moved there with her husband and two toddlers. They love what they could get for the money and the arts vibe. They are a few years away from school age though and they've pretty much decided they aren't going to use the public schools there.

Maynard has many family friendly festivals.

Trick or Trick in downtown Maynard is coming up this Thursday.
Halloween Trick or Treat In Maynard & Hudson | Boston Central

The local businesses really get into the spirit. In past years, they decorate the businesses, business owners wear costumes and children in their costumes go from business to business in the downtown filling their trick-or-treat bags.

The Summer Street neighborhood is pretty, lots of character.

Maynard's taxes have gone up considerably in the last couple of years. Stow is worse though especially considering they do not have town water or sewer, or even a fire hydrant. Maynard feels like an upscale Clinton to me. The traffic on 117 in the mornings during the school year is awful and the cops are constantly pulling over vehicles and always call for backup when they do. Many times I have seen more lights in the downtown area than at a Rush concert, but some of those 75 year old residents can be pretty intimidating.
