Hi I was wondering if anyone is an Administrative Assistant to a Realtor? I got offered a job in MA for $10 a hour and $100 everytime he sells a house. But he wants me to be my own Independent contractor. I was told by people if I have to pay my own taxes making $10 an hour it will not be worth it to me. Just curious what other people think or if anyone is an administrative assistant to a Realtor. Thanks

Does not seem worth it to me either. If you are working as a contractor then it's actually closer to a $9/hr job because you have to pay the entire 15.3% self employment tax yourself instead of splitting it with your employer.

I was at Sudbury Farms (Roche Brothers) yesterday and I heard my cashier telling the customer in front of me that he made $14/hr. He was either in HS or college. I think you should aim for at least $12/hr for a part time job in MA since many entry level jobs pay in the $12-15/hr range without a college degree.

Have you considered working towards becoming a RE agent?

This is a great question. If the OP desires to become a RE agent then this would be a great job to take to learn the ropes from a more experienced agent. Also will give her time to take courses to become certified to work on her own in the future.

Seems kinda scammy to me. If you're an administrative assistant, you should be classified as an employee, not a 1099 independent contractor. The realtor seems to be trying to avoid payroll taxes. (If you're an employee, he pays 7.65% social security payroll tax, as do you; if you're a contractor, you pay the "employer" portion and the "employee" portion, meaning 15 cents of every dollar you earn will go to social security tax, as an example. And that's before MA income tax, federal income tax, Medicare....) Unless you are really in a bind, I'd stay away from this opportunity.

Sounds shady. If you are working a steady number of hours for someone on a regular basis not project basis with a defined start and end date, the tax people classify this as an employee not a contractor.

Getting good advice - It is a bad deal. Unless he pays you cash, off the books but that is illegal.
