I have basically NO money until I start working, but I would like somewhere to go and lift weights and use the machines (cable weights.) Not the most intense in the world, I am not ready for Cross-Fit.. but somewhere where I can do the "circuit" of machines. No trainers, no giant tractor tires, no classes (I may have went for one, once, but, meh. Unless they have Boot Camp. That one is great. Or the workout with the two ropes. (Fireman's workout) .. Something intense, that I can actually DO.

So, more than just the treadmill.

I'm seeing the ads on TV for each group and I'm interested in the cheapest and no commitment and whatever but can someone tell me that such a thing doesn't exist.. if its really $10 a month that is one thing. but if it's $10 plus $10 plus $49 every six months plus more then ???????

I was a member at WOW and have been to Planet Fitness as a guest several times, but neither were in Boston.

Overall WOW is a better rounded gym I think. Planet Fitness is lacking in free weights (no bench or squat rack for example), and from what I remember didn't have much for cable stuff (none set up for cable crossovers). The advantage Planet Fitness has is that overall they seem a little better maintained. Some of the WOWs are a little run down and when equipment breaks it can be a little while before it gets repaired. But some are nicer than others, you would really have to visit each in your area to get an idea.

As far as strings attached, look for specials. They both frequently offer deals where they'll wave the initiation fee (and just have to pay the $10/month). They usually do lock you in for a year (without a compelling reason for leaving), Planet Fitness may not.
