I live in Provincetown and I've recently become interested in Thai cooking. The problem is that a lot of the ingredients (lemon grass, for instance) can't really be found at standard grocery stores. I was just wondering if anyone was aware of any ethnic grocery stores on the Cape. I've googled a bit, but no luck so far.

Maybe a Hannaford's if there's one around. Take a day trip to the Kam Man marketplace in Quincy, it's huge. Bring a cooler for very cheap fresh fish. And have dim sum at the nearby huge Chinese restaurant.

Default Asian Groceries

I don't know if there are any Asian markets on the Cape, but there are a few excellent Thai/Cambodian groceries in Providence. Try New Asia Market or Battambang on Elmwood Ave. Both of them have fresh kaffir lime leaves, and interesting produce as well as everything else you'll need. Then go to Apsara around the corner on Public St for lunch, or drive to Thai Star on Chalkstone Ave.

No Whole Foods markets on the Cape yet? They usually have an excellent selection of exotic ingredients.

BillyPilgrim, Miu: Thank you both, but, no, unfortunately there are neither Hannafords nor Whole Foods on the cape There are in the Boston area, but that's a good couple hours away and I'm hoping for something closer.

Leorah: Common mistake--I'm in Provincetown, MA, a little tourist town on the tip of Cape Cod, the name of which frequently gets mistaken for Providence, RI! 'Preciate the help, but it would be a bit of a hike for groceries

As you mention, Provincetown is tough... high rent... seasonal... not easy to have a business sell cheap food there.

Stop+Shop has a fairly big Asian section. Hope you'll find one close enough to you...

Any Thai restaurants near you? See if you can buy the lemongrass from them. Or at least ask them how their get their cooking supplies. They might be willing to order extra supplies and sell to you for cash.

Default thai ingredients

What about Trader Joe's in Hyannis? It's a bit of a schlep, but they might have what you're looking for.

Although not all that close to PTown, the Sandwich Super Stop and Shop has a pretty large international foods section. You may want to give them a call and see if it's worth the trip.
