Hello everyone,
We are relocating from Red Bank, NJ to Boston for a job. My husband will need to commute to South Station.

I'm wondering what Norton is like. It seems, on paper anyway, that schools are good, low crime, housing prices good...but is there much to do there? Is there much shopping close by? I'm used to living where groceries and shopping are 10 minute drive at most and the beach is pretty close.

I've been checking all the towns that I hear about on the forum, like Mansfield, Walpole, Foxboro, Easton, Wrentham, but it is hard to find the house we want...so I'm expanding the areas of my search.

Any advice on Norton would be much appreciated.

Norton has one grocery store and a few other basics, it's mostly quiet and residential. Everything you need can be found in the surrounding towns, but don't expect a beach. Living on the Mansfield side of Norton would probably be the most convenient to stuff.

Have you considered being closer to the shore? on the eastern side of Rt. 3 maybe ? or north of Boston ?

Thanks for your replies. No, not considering North or close to shore....I don't think I'll miss the shore too much. It was nice being near the beach in Red Bank, but truth is we didn't go more than 2-3 times a summer so it's not a top priority.

Most important to me is a decent school for my 8 year old, friendly folks and a commute not much more than an hour for my husband - not more than an hour on the train and 15 minutes to get to train station. We are looking for a house with AC, 2.5 baths and a basement, about 2200 square feet or so with at least 3 bedrooms. That seems tough to get. Ideal would be to pay about 525,000 for a house, no more. And yes, shopping near and things to do for kids like dance schools, soccer teams, restaurants and malls.

You'll do fine in Norton.

Norton is a nice town. The center is very New England with the church and green. Wheaton College is right by the green as well. The Rte 95/495 junction has everything you need close by. Norton has the TPC-Boston that hosts the Deutsche Bank Classic (PGA event) in September. It is also home to the Xfinity Center, a 12,000 seat outdoor concert venue. Gillette Stadium, home to the NFL Patriots and MLS Revolution, is nearby in Foxboro. The Plainridge Casino Slots Parlor is close at the Rtes 1 and 495 junction in Plainville. There are many local shopping options such as Rte 140 in Mansfield, Patriot Place in Foxboro netx to Gillette Stadium, and the Rte 1/1A stretch in North and South Attleboro which has the Emerald Mall and many big box retailers. Boston, Providence, Newport, and the Cape are all fairly short drives away.

Another very nice town and good schools would be Westwood. If this is a corporate relo, you will most likely have a well experienced Realtor you can rely on. You may want to be posting on the Massachusetts forum, if you haven't already rather than the RI forum.

Westwood is a nice town with a great location but finding the desired type of house for just 525k there would be difficult.

Well, I guess I have the opposite view of you folks because I don't have the same high regard as you for Norton. The schools there are not nearly as good as the towns first mentioned by the OP. I would search more in those and maybe include North Attleborough, Franklin and Norfolk.
