Been to Hermosillo, but am interested in Merida. So hopefully HMO could be used as some type of benchmark. Looks like better climate in MID. Compare the capital of Sonora to the capital of Yucatan. Anyone?
Depends on what you consider to be "better climate". Merida, like Cuba, is in the path of hurricanes. Aside from that, some Nortenos find it enchanting, and some people do opt to retire there. I'm told the local Mayan culture exerts a positive influence, and people are friendly. It's a good location if you enjoy archaeology. As you probably know, it's larger than Hermosillo at over 1 million residents.
When considering relocating anywhere, check the prognosis for the future water supply as climate change intensifies, and study the potential effects of sea level rise. Merida has a very low elevation, and like Florida, is built on limestone. There could be sinkhole issues, and problems of sea water seeping up from below ground. You don't say what your plans are for the areas you're considering.

Snowbirding..perhaps buying a bungalow or townhouse..assuming it is 50km inland, as I understand their law.
I don't think anywhere in Merida qualifies as being more than 50km away from the nearest coastline, but you can do a fideicomiso and own property through a trust. Climate of the two couldn't be any different, but both are ideal for snowbirding months. I think you'll find Hermosillo very unattractive compared to Merida, its more a place to work and make money like the rest of northern Mexico. Few expats are in the area too so finding what you might be looking for in terms of a living arrangement probably would be more difficult.
