I understand that the big boys like Starbucks is there. Is there an American on the forum who operates a
small business in this free zone? How is this done, where do I look for this information?

This is just a pipe dream right now. I came to the forums to find a dentist in TJ or Los Algodones and all of a sudden i'm thinking, wow, I could live in Mexico? So here I am looking to see if it would be at all possible.

I plan to go there for a week to consult with Dentists I've found on here. I'm about 6 hrs away so will be taking my car. Is one week enough or should I do two? This first trip will not have any actual dental work done...so a few appointments maybe 1.5 hrs each with the rest of the time to check out the place. TIA

A lot will depend on the business and how many people you want to hire. If you do it by the book it will have a lot of hassles, especially for a non-resident. There is plenty of red tape and people to pay off (excuse me fees to pay). There are people around who specialize in helping you deal with the different applications so it's just a matter of coming up with the money and setting aside a fair amount of time.

This is why most small businesses don't quite follow the rules and figure if I can make it work then I will worry about making it legal.

Thanks for your answer Willy702. I know what you mean about the red tape and pay offs, sorry I meant fees.
Maybe TJ should just be my vacation spot for now. Lets hope they don't change the rules about visas in that free zone anytime soon. My business is moveable but with quite a few challenges outside of whatever business laws there may be in Mexico for expats.
Thanks again though. Just shelving it for now.

While in TJ for the one week, eat some Vietnamese food at Pequeno Saigon. Talk to the owner while your there, he is American and opened up one of the first Pho Restaurants in TJ. Maybe he can give you some tid-bits.

Look around for other American owned restaurants or businesses while there...maybe spark up the conversation with your dentist.
