Due to gas price hike, it is really a chaos with protest, blockade, looting these days in Mexico.

I'm much concerned with safety for travelling to Mexico, even for places such as Oxaca, Guanajuato, Cancun...

This might drive even more poor people to engage in drug deals. Also, not sure if more crimes to be targeted on foreigners. ...

i've been here just a little over a year.
the only thing i noticed was when travelling to Leon, gas stations had long cues.. but that disappeared the next day.

The Good News: things have calmed down.
The Bad News: Another jump in prices scheduled next month....and throughout 2017.

Peaceful marches end week of gas price protests

As I former fulltime resident of MX, who were considering relocating there again, BUYING is definitely off the table for now. We will continue to visit as long as it's still fun. If they start doing roadblocks, it makes travel a mess! In fact we're flying down next week.

Mexico protest over gasoline price hike turns violent

Mexico: 20% gas price hike fuels looting, protests

Protests over gas prices affect travelers at ports of entry

Running on Fumes: Pandemonium at Mexico’s Gas Pumps

Had planned to visit Turkey, but balked at terrorism attacks. Then transited to Mexico, but there were also too many protests simultaneously across the country. In particular, need to tak bus for the following cities.
Mexico city, Guanajuato, San Miguel, Guadalajara

With blockades in highway, buses might not even operate...

There are no blockades now (that I know of and I am in touch with friends outside GDL). We HAVE been caught in blocades...once trying to get home from GDL Airport; once in Michoacan on way to San Miguel de Allende. Oh...another time in Michoacan, heading to Morelia. This was when 2 cartels were going at it tooth and nail....they'd commandeer buses and set them on fire across the entire highway.

We are heading down late next week; flying into GDL. Oh...on a trip last summer, there was an indigenous takeover of the airport...shut it down to cars and taxis. What a mess!! Luckily we were inside the terminal flying out, when everyone showed up to block entry. It was on/off all fall, but now is over (at least currently).

While we love MX, it does have some warts.

I visit Mexico to see family and friends and they do not live anywhere near those tourist destinations, and I usually feel safe.

My family discourages me from visiting Mexico City, though. Despite the fact, I want to visit there at least once.

Seems really melodramatic ... this is like saying as a Canadian I will not got back to the USA due to all the crazy protests and violence incidences that occur in the USA.
