Telmex is not a true monopoly, as it once was – it is now a quasi-monopoly. Carlos Slim has not owned shares, as stated, for 30 years... only 20 years since 1990. Notice the other large investors, and their interesting payment structure. Here is the abridged story, via Wikipedia:
"Telmex was founded in 1947 when a group of Mexican investors bought Swedish Ericsson's Mexican branch. In 1950 the same investors bought the Mexican branch of the ITT Corporation thus becoming the only telephone provider in the country. In 1972 the Mexican government bought the company, turning it into a government monopoly.

In 1990, Telmex was bought by a group of investors formed principally by Carlos Slim, France Télécom, & Southwestern Bell Corporation, whose tender was the largest. However, controversially, the payment itself took place over the course of the next several years, using money earned by the phone service.

After privatization, Telmex began investing in new modern infrastructure, creating a nationwide fiber optic network, thus offering service to most of the country.

In 1991, the Mexican government sold its remaining stock in Telmex.
Although Telmex is now a private company it stills remains as a quasi-monopoly. There are few other telephone companies in Mexico, Alestra (formerly AT&T), Axtel, Maxcom, Megacable and Cablecom. Telmex is the 2nd most complained-about provider in PROFECO (Mexico's Consumer Commission)."

He is the richest man in the world! He makes more interest in one year than 99% of people in the world make in a lifetime. No one is saying for him to sell everything, but he could bring clean drinking water to every village in Mexico if he wanted to, but he doesn't want to.

How you know? You know him personally? You are inside his mind and know what he wants?

You and your position are ridiculous and silly.

Agreed. So far, there is little-to-nothing factual here to discuss. And opinions based on idle speculation and envy are... worthless.

Fact: Carlos Slim is the richest man in the world

Fact: Carlos Slim could bring permanent, clean drinking water, plumbing and electricity to every village in Mexico and remain extremely wealthy

Fact: Carlos Slim is only interested in lining his pockets and doesn't care at all about the poor people in his country

Opinion: Carlos Slim is a greedy, selfish human being

So, I'm ridiculous because I care more about poor Mexicans than you do? I'm ridiculous because I want to hold the worlds richest man accountable because he refuses to help the poor in his country?

This will be my final post on this topic. There's no point in continuing to debate anything that is based in nothing more than speculative gossip and unfounded attacks on Slim's character. You throw in senseless drama, and confuse opinion with fact, such as when you accused Slim of wanting to buy more yachts, planes, etc., etc. Your emotional lashings of this man render the debate pointless.

On this one point, you're right. Congrats to Carlos.

Did you or someone else do a real study to determine this? How did you arrive at the calculations on which you base your statement? How many Mexican villages are currently without water, plumbing, and electricity? How much would it cost to complete your service request? How did you determine that a widespread village fix-it program would be the best use for his money?

Are you a psychoanalyst? Financial planner? Mind-reader? What sort of proof do you have of Carlos Slim's motives or ethics?

I think the people of Mexico should lift THEMSELVES up. Morbid obesity and a diet that clogs the arteries, low interest in education, criminal tendencies, drug-use, and ignorance are all prevalent and ever-present. Willingness to show utter disdain for the law in crossing the borders as well. A preference for making babies instead of getting a college degree. The passiveness to stand around all day waiting for a job to come to them. Content to be on the bottom, working the lowest wages doing the most mundane tasks under the most horrid of conditions. A spirited people, but so downtrodden in effort and existence.

No one person or entity can throw enough money to remedy the destructive tendencies and habits that are inherent in the people themselves. This change must come from within the people themselves. Reading is free. It's not Carlos Slim's fault.
