Hello, Im moving to Miami as a college student this upcoming January. I do not want to take my car since it is expensive and i will be living on campus. I plan to buy a scooter instead. Do you need a motorcycle license to ride a scooter and is insurance required? what about helmets? How is the public transportation?
Do the same rules apply to 49cc scooters and such?

We just discussed something about scooters and I believe one poster said you don't need a motorcycle license, nor insurance, but I'm not 100% sure.

If you're going to attend UM you'll be right on the Metrorail line, or if you attend MDC downtown you'll have access to Metromover and Metrorail. If you go any place else the answer for public transportation will probably be dismal.

I'm 99.9% sure you don't have to wear a helmet, but that's really not a good, in fact it's dumb, idea.

No, unfortunately. It needs it, but doesn't have it. Metrobus does go over there but that's a whole'nother story.

Wow I wish I had asked this question before I brought my scooter from Virginia.

You will need a license plate even for 49cc engine.

A helmet is not required but you'll want one in Miami if your not a good driver.

I got ticketed once for not having eye protection as my helmet doesn't have a visor.

You will need insurance for it. It's fairly cheap. Mine is about $300 a year, and actually probably less i just can't remember how much.

Public transportation is not like NYC but it's decent. However, it will take you forever to get anywhere (I commuted from Kendall to Miami beach and back over the summer using public transportation and it took 2+ hours each way)

Good luck! Miami has the best motorcycyling/scooter weather around in the "winter" here and even the warmer months.

Good to know all that... I don't plan on getting a scooter, but thanks for clearing it all up

I would bring your car. FL is a death trap for motorcycles, scooters, and bicycle riders.

Agreed.

FIU does have a shuttle where the bus(3,93MAX) lets you off, but you have to cross the street...and most drivers here aren't pedestrian friendly. There are also two other metrobuses that go in there as well.

Jesus

I had a scooter when attending FIU. A 49 cc is OK, you need a tag and insurance and some cops might harass if you don't wear a helment.

I would recommend you a 75 cc or a 125 cc, a Honda. Don't buy anything Italian or Chinese, it won't stand Florida weather. I once had a Vespa and the thing burst in flames.

Miami is perfect for mopeds, but when in unsavoury areas, better tie the thing to a tree with a shielded cable.
