I've been reading about how the new governors of WI and OH are pledging to kill high speed rail projects in their states. In WI, $810 million in stimulus funds would pay for the entire project and in OH, $400 million was allocated.

The articles state if the projects are killed the funding would go back to the government for distribution elsewhere.

Obviously the Orlando to Miami high speed rail is too expensive (a price tag of $8 billion) and the Tampa to Orlando line needs $300 million more.

If Tampa to Orlando got the additional $300 million needed to pay for their line that still leaves $910 million for other projects.

I'm wondering if the funds are only allowed to be used for high speed rail or whether other rail projects are also acceptable.

If other projects are acceptable, I'm wondering if a project like Baylink would be eligible.

I dont know - considering the high cost of the new Marlins stadium. I doubt there are any funds left.

Those two under consideration right now are regional and have been in the works for a looooooong time. I doubt the cash-strapped legislature on the whole will be too willing to give the city who already has a rail system an upgrade just for kicks.

Oh, if only the metro rail went to Mami Beach, my life would be perfect. Just over the Macarthur Causeway, or the Venitian...

True, but isn't the Fed directing the funds to certain projects?

Yes they could. Though they might be wondering why that half-penny tax several years ago that was supposed to fund transit improvements fell into a black hole thanks to the county government...

Indeed, RE: 1/2 penny.

I'd really like to raise it to 3-5 cents, if not every where then at least in Brickell, Downtown and Miami Beach, but how politically unpopular that would be. Also raise some of the reduced fares.

I actually like that Metromover is free because it promotes use of the system and pedestrianism in the CBD.

Such a shame nobody has the cahoons to do that.
