So much for all the complaints on this board

One thing that as a European living in the US always amazes me, is how many Americans will travel to overhyped Americanized resorts like Cabo (freezing water btw), Cancun, etc to be only around other Americans (and not venture outside of the resort), but yet have never been to Miami.
I will say that there is a rather substantial - i.e., night and day - difference between visiting Miami for a week on vacation and living there full-time. A lot of the complaints on this board emanate from folks who tried to live in Miami, not disgruntled tourists.

But yes, I do fully agree that one can have a very *exotic* vacation in this nation, and that many Americans are sorely lacking in the realm of geographic exploration.

My guess is the numbers from these countries to MIA is why MIA tops cities like BOS or PHL. I wonder if we surveyed only people from the EU if MIA would rank so high.

The main reason I wonder is cuz the crime rate in EU is way lower than the best of the USA. Europeans aren't used to crime I think. It would seem to me they'd be the last ones to go to MIA, while people from South of the border who are used to sicarios, revolutionaries, cartels, etc would be ok w MIA especially for the Spanish speaking convenience.
Besides NYC, CHI, and LA, where else in the US would rank above Miami in EU tourist? Miami and Florida in general are pretty high in that department.

I'm sorry, but this article is fruity-er than an IHOP pancake special! I mean I totally get the concept of culture shock and how the Japanese would hate Paris. But come on. People believing that they're the "Sun King", that they're being bombarded by microwaves, or being bugged after a short stay in a hotel? I mean these people were nuts to begin with. To need therapy after a vacation, I think It would have to be a hell of a lot worse. Like maybe "taking a 'vacation' in Jonestown Guyana during the time of the massacres" worse.

Miami is competitive thanks to SUN, SHOPPING AND SIGHTSEEING.

New York: SIGHTSEEING, SHOPPING

Destination in the Third World are more competitive:

SUN, SEX TOURISM, SIGHTSEEING AND IN SOME CASES, SHOPPING

I think only Americans take New York as a cultural destination.

New York: Shopping, Sightseeing.
European tourists are not precisely cultural, except Russians and Eastern Europeans.
