You know I forgot I never really look at the floor and have not flown in months now. The longest in over 5-6 years since I am stuck with a crazy amount of work in law school but I think this is pretty good. Check out these two links: Miami International Airport :: Art in Public Places - North Terminal :: Miami-Dade County and National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association, Inc. The North Terminal IMO is one of the nices and efficient terminals in the country. (once the new FIS opens and the baggage system is working fully which is in a few months)

Ok FlyMIA, the North Terminal rocks!! I haven't seen these pictures before!

The Terrazzo is awesome and I like the use of Blue in this first picture.
It isn't immediately apparent but the blue (carpet?) flooring to the right side of the picture is a nice touch and there's an overall cast of Turquoise hue that is reflecting on the far pillars, the floor and the far wall in the area to the right.

I like this area as well and I'm glad they chose that Turquoise hue to line the signs. Lower ceilings create a more welcoming environment in this area. The shininess of the Terrazzo floors is a plus, and a compliment to that wet Miami air.

I like the fact they have terrazzo but I never unerstood, why black in the background? I would have preferred a South Florida hue like pastel or sea blue. But regardless it is stunning, I hope the entire airport jives with the north terminal theme by the time the dust settles.

I hope so too. I have never used the new South Terminal. Maybe will find some pictures later.

One thing which Miami is not that great of its food and shopping. Not that I use either much since I am either going home or leaving from home but it is a big hub and I wish the options were better. More places are oppening up though but it could be better. Yes I am pretty sure there are some carpet areas around the gates which is alright, it has an American Airlines blue type color. I cant remember if it is a few or most etc.. But yes, carpet actually is a good idea for gate areas especially since some people will lay on the floor with there bags and sit etc.. Kids and stuff like that, long delays.

As for the tropical theme thing, MIA employees (not airline's) all wear tropical style tourist shirts which IMO look horrible. Also as you can see in the picture the golf carts are painted in a brigh colors.
I like the modern steel look of the airport. Not sure blue/tropical floors would work well I think what they did to the floors worked well. There are some tropical type themed places to eat though.

I flew through Miami's North terminal (from Houston to Central America) and as someone who wasn't in the presecurity area, let me say, they did have quite a variety or restaurants and shops considering I wasn't going to leave that area. It is a major improvement over what it was. I think the other issues are now the remaining terminals, exluding South Terminal. Once you pass security you have a BK and Pizza Hut. Slim pickings. But in all fairness, MIA was not designed with 911 security issues and I remember a time when anyone could go to the gates, move about back and forth, so having the shops and food court on the other side of security wasn't an issue. The bottom line is, MIA should have two different airports, one before and one after security. Same types of ammenities on both sides would be great.

I have never been on the South Terminal either, I think they are flights to Europe or other areas I don't travel to.

The inlaid designs designs in the Terrazzo at MIA remind me of the inlaid designs at Denver International Airport, but at least MIA doesn't scare the sh1t out of its poor travelers with creepy New World Order like murals like DIA does!

Some of the creepy murals in question:

This is in the baggage claim area.

Welcome to Denver! It's already creepy enough landing in Denver after you've been in a city with some racial diversity, because it's so predominantly white that you find yourself thinking "what the hell did they do with the other races!?" and then you start to remember "oh yeah, that's just their demographic"

Well there is a small food court with some other options but yeers things are limited before security. It does have a 24 hour dunkin donuts though which is nice if someone's flight is dealyed till 2am.

The South Terminal is home to all Star Alliance and Skyteam airlines. So Delta, United, TAM, TACA, Alitialia, Air France, US Airways, Lufthansa which flies the A380 into MIA and some other airlines including One World Alliance airline LAN. The North Terminal including concourse E is home to One World alliance besides for LAN but LAN is suppose to move into the North Terminal soon.

Thanks for posting the picture of the North Terminal. This same concept should be built into the South Terminal and if they ever do anything with the Central Terminal. It is uniquely Miami! THIS is what I'd expect to see throughout, after $6B is spent on improvements.

Now...could you please allocate a small fraction of the $6B to build escalators between the 3rd and 2nd floors??? Especially since you've spent $$$$$ on the MIA mover, and it dumps everybody who returns a rental car or takes Metrorail on the 3rd floor...
