Hi Miamians! I was recently offered a job by American Airlines as a pilot. I wanted to hear some thing from my Miami friends, as I was also offered a job by Delta in Atlanta. First off, is there a decent-sized population of Brazilians in Miami? My sister used to live there when she went to UM, and she said there were some South Americans, but barely any Brazilians. But she graduated in 2009, so things might have changed. I was born in Salvador, Brazil but I moved to Dallas when I was 15. Also, where are some socially-active areas for me to reside? I will only be working about 85 hours a month, so I would want somewhere with a lot of thing to do. Also, how would people's reaction be toward a foreigner? I moved here 11 years ago but I still have a DEEP accent. I can pay up to $2,725 a month on rent. Also, if race would matter, I am mixed. My mother is half white and Amerindian and my father is half black and white. Thanks!

There is a lot of Brazilians here as mentioned in this Forbes article.

Guess Who's Buying Miami? - Forbes

And in the winter time you here Portugese more often. In fact I read that those looking in the RE section of Miami herald are mostly Brazilians so you will find plenty of your fellow country men here.

You will be able to find something nice for that rental amount, and you should look at the Neighborhood map in the sticky section when choosing a place, be wary of right next to the airport because it is industrial but Miami spring is a nice and quaint area.

There are lots of things to do if you love the outdoors. Don't worry about being a foreigner here this is a very international city and skin tone should not be a problem.

With a job like that I'd definitely go for it.

Regarding our local population (I'm Brazilian as well - born there and raised here), it's dropped in the last few years mainly due to the recession, I know that a significant number of people (in Kendall/West Kendall for example) moved back to Brazil, or to Broward (mainly due to lower housing prices and slightly better standards of living (mostly). The areas, here in Miami-Dade, with the largest Brazilian concentrations (in significant numbers, places where you'll see 2 or 3 Brazilian little stores and such) are the North Beach section of Miami Beach, North Bay Village, Aventura (partially), Kendall (partially) and in smaller numbers in Brickell/Downtown/Midtown.

Most people really are up north in Broward, generally in the Deerfield and Pompano Beach (plus neighboring Lighthouse Point) cities, also in smaller numbers in Margate, Tamarac, Coconut Creek and Coral Springs. There's so many up in Pompano and Deerfield that there are a few brazilian supermarkets, restaurants, even travel agencies and car dealerships.

And also it's a very diverse and international place, like Cubanchic said, so you should have no worries regarding racism and such.

Your rental budget is great, you'll be able to live in nearly every neighborhood of SoFL (that is, based on renting a 2/2 or possibly a small 3/2 - even better if only for large 1/1). More active places - and nice with low to relatively low crime rates - in that budget would probably be Brickell, Aventura, Coral Gables (Miracle Mile area), Coconut Grove (see the Sticky Map - there's a big area to avoid there), even Dadeland nowadays (there's new bars, plus restaurants; also there's a Giraffas and a Brazilian store in the US-1).

Lol you won't be the only foreigner or person with an accent . There is a sizable Brazilian community in Miami so you won't be alone!

FYI most of the people in Miami were born outside the USA so you will fit right in. as for the size of the Brazilian population here it increases as you claim the social ladder. meaning the Brazilians who are hear are not poor Brazilian migrants looking for work in farms but wealthy Brazilian investors who like Miami as a 2nd home. in short you will fit right in.

You will fit perfectly fine in Miami.

There are a lot of Brazilians in Miami. Miami is better than Atlanta hands down.

Miami is vibrant, and 70 percent foreign-born.

You working for Eagle now? AA isn't hiring off the street yet right?

As for a place to live if you are single I would defeintly go for Brickell. In all honesty your budget seems a little bit high for first year pay at AA but with that budget you can get a nice place. I would suggest being under budget and find a nice one bedroom for under $2,000 a month. You want a condo I presume?

As for the Brazillian population it is pretty good here. Tons of South Americans here you will fit right in. What type you flying?

You will not have any problems in Miami. Now a foreigner in Miami is tall with blond hair and light skinned. As mentioned above, the vast majority of Miami residents are from somewhere else. Native born in the Miami area means you have a high probability of moving somewhere else to start a better life.

The real question should be which company the OP will have a better job with, better benefits, better choice of route selection, better aircraft to work on, etc...
