In general why are salaries so low in Miami compared to other major cities? It can't be just a cost of living matter because for instance Houston has way higher salaries and lower cost of living.

cause the economy sucks. if businesses arent making money they arent paying high wages. also there are a lot of businesses employing tourists and illegals that will work for less than min wage.

I think if you work for a company whose revenue is based on the local economy then yes your wages are low.

If you work for a major national company who happened to be either headquartered here or has a major operation then you have the possibility of making higher wages that are comparable to other major cities.

Unlike other cities and metro areas in the country, Miami (and the rest of the metro) hasn't found what it wants to do from an economic standpoint. It's still too focused on real estate and selling drinks on the beach.

I think it is a supply/demand thing. A lot of people with solid qualifications want to live here because of the weather, girls, night live, close to family, etc... and there just aren't that many large corporate employers. Burger King, Carnival. Ryder, Lennar...that's about it.

True, and even if there were plentiful employment opportunities here, the city would be bursting at the seams with everyone trying to move down here. Nothing would change other than worse traffic and more people to deal with.

Miami, like other coastal cities such as New York City and San Francisco, is a desirable area to live and the salaries reflect that.

It may have more to do with Florida as a whole than Miami specifically. There's also the no-income tax deal which lets employers believe that people can be paid less. My field is somewhat specialized, but I have found that salaries are 20 to 30% higher in Miami than on the west coast of Florida. Not sure how Orlando or Jacksonville compare.

You mean Miami doesn't focus on Tourism, Cruise Industry, International Banking, just to name a few ?
