We are considering a move to Miami with high schoolers. We are coming from a great school district. Is there a high school in the Miami area that has both strong academics and athletics? One of my girls is a nationally ranked sprinter and is hoping to go to college on a track. Or possibly a reasonably priced private school? We are hoping not to have a horrible commute, but we currently live in the DFW area, so we are use to traffic. Any advice on great public or private high schools would be appreciated⌒_⌒

Do you need to move to Miami proper? Or do you mean South Florida when you say Miami? Will you have jobs? Where will they be located?

Because if you don't need to be *in* Miami, there is Weston.

It is honestly way too difficult to find stats on track and field, but I like a challenge. Here is a link to the top girls track and field competitors in the State.

Florida High School Girls Rankings | Outdoor Track And Field 2016 Leaders

It looks like many of the top competitors come from Miami, but I'm not seeing most of the top academic schools on the list.

Sorry Ruski, but it looks like Weston might not overcome this particular hurdle.

Thanks for the info! And no we don't have to be "in" Miami. How bad is the commute from Weston to downtown Miami?

Bad but doable. I do it a couple times a year. I have a coworker who does it every day from Sunrise (near Weston) all the way to Brickell.

Funny thing, I drove home from Miami to Weston late last night and made it in 35 minutes, but there was no traffic.

With traffic, you are looking at more than 1 hour, could be 1.5 hour. You can count, every day, on some nincompoop to cause an accident or break down or run out of gas and slow everyone down. It is not uncommon to pass 2-3 accident scenes.

If you decide to move to Miami the school district here is lacking. There is an application process to get into magnet schools, and you have missed the application deadline unless you are a military family. The only public high school that I would consider moving into the boundary line for is Palmetto Bay Senior High. Most charter schools will accept your child, but most do not have excellent academics or sports programs, even if they say they do. Of course private school is always an option if you can afford it. We just moved here last August and have spent the past 8 months researching schools.

Public schools are the best option (Traditional American schools)
