The first question is whether to wander down from Fort Lauderdale to Miami for dinner, or should I just stay in FL. Would you recommend looking at Tripadvisor or Yelp ratings for Miami? I'm looking for a continental restaurant, French, Italian etc. There is Bistro Mezzaluna near my hotel but reviews are mixed.

Very close to you in Fort Lauderdale, there is Kelly's Landing. Go there.

Or 15th Street Fisheries.

Or Boatyard.

Italian? Hit Las Olas Boulevard - there are many very nice Italian places there: Louie Bossi's, Timpano, Piazza Italia, Tuscan Prime Grill, Caffe Europa, Luigi's Tuscan Grill, Talento (very new, supposed to be opening any time)

Then in other parts of Fort Lauderdale there are more nice places, like Terrace Grill / Sparrow rooftop bar, Sage French Cafe, Casa D'Angelo, Cafe Vico, Coconuts, Casa Blanca Cafe, Vine+Garden, Kaluz, J Alexander's... too many to name.

Although there is nothing wrong with going to Miami if you feel like it. Can't make the decision for you

If you end up in Miami, check out Toscana Divina in Brickell. Or Ironside Pizza in the northern parts of Miami.

There is a nice Italian restaurant at Brickell City Centre... it's on the first floor in a food hall called La Centrale. It was very good, pasta made in-house, it's table service as well. That part of Miami is my favorite area too.

Where were you thinking ..Miami or Miami Beach??....Il Mulino Sunny Isles or Le Sirenuse in Surfside would be my choice for Italian or Thomas Keller’s Surf Club, also in Surfside, for Continental....all 3 are roughly 30 minutes from Mezzaluna.

IMO if you are in Fort Lauderdale, stick there. Why spend all extra time on the road going to Miami and back.

On the other hand... you could take the Brightline train from downtown Fort Lauderdale to downtown Miami, then hop on a Metromover and go to Brickell. Make it an adventure. Brightline trains are very nice.

Also in Fort Lauderdale, not too far from your hotel is Pelican Landing. And a more upscale place - Grille 66 & Bar.

And can't dismiss places like Steak 954 (in the W hotel on the beach) or Burlock Coast (in the Ritz Carlton).

The question is too vague. Ft Lauderdale is loaded with some of the best restaurants around. But what exactly are you looking for? Something super special/unique? Maybe pricey? If so, Miami has more of that. Palm d'Or, NAOE, Alter, Surf Club, The Bazaar, Le Sirenuse, etc.

If in Ft Lauderdale, there is some pretty awesome and iconic places, too. What exactly are you wanting? One thing many visitors don't realize about South Florida is that we are a foodie paradise. Nobody thinks of us that way down here, but we are knee deep in ridiculous good restaurants of all flavors. It's surprising.

So simply "Where should I eat?" - there is about 1,000 spots that are "must do".... can you be more specific?

If you are just looking for a good Italian restaurant, I'd stick in Ft Lauderdale for sure. Louie Bossi, Cafe Martorano, or Casa D'Angelo. For French, if you want to do something special - Palm d'Or.
