I live and work overseas and I have a rental property in Miami. I had hurricane shutters installed on March 12th. The next day, I called my homeowners insurance company, which is based in Palm Beach County, so that they could lower my homeowners insurance rate. The insurance rep. said that they would send someone by the property to check out the property & that he would be calling me back. I never got a call back & he does not pick up the phone anymore, reply to my voice messages, or reply to any of my emails.

I know that there have been shutdowns due to Covid-19, but I find it strange that I never got a call back or reply to my emails, which can be accessed from anywhere. I have also heard that Florida has been reopening.

Is this insurance agent just avoiding me so that I wouldn't get the lower rate or are things still shut down? What should I do?

Report the Agent and or the Insurance to The Insurance Commisioner in Tallahassee.

Now do not expect much of a break even when they finally get to look at the Shutters....I have had accordion ones for many years.

In the Spring of 2019 I replaced the tile roof of my house, and also the Flat One over the Garage and kitchen....Had a Wind Mitigation report Done on the Property, It cost me $90.00.

After all that raucus, my yearly policy price/premium went down $120.

Insurance companies are essential services and were never shut down. If you have no other point of contact for that company, my advice would be to try to switch companies to one that is more responsive. If you're having this much difficulty in a time of relative calm, just imagine what would happen if your house is damaged during a hurricane (or other incident) and you have to rely on that agent/company to get your property repaired and you reimbursed when tens of thousands of other people are trying to do the same.

When I had a new roof put on my parents' home and had the inspection done last year, his insurance rate dropped a little over $800. And while I don't know about shutters, I've been told by my agent that if I replaced the windows and doors on my house, my rate would go down roughly $1,500

Ok. So, I reported the insurance agent and will definitely be changing homeowners insurance companies.

Insurance companies in Florida are like nothing I ever seen. They will flip the bird to you and walk away.
