Hello all,

I am really thinking hard about moving from Philadelphia to Michigan ( North of Detriot) and it will not be to tough for me to find a job because I can apply within my company. However, my girlfriend is worried she will not be able to find a job. She is a pastry chef. How is it finding a job? Are there a lot of jobs available? I know Michigans economy took a hit with the car dealerships but not sure about other fields of business. Any information would be great.

Thank you,

Rich

She should be able to find a job. There are several top-tier bake/cake shops in MI, but there are also a ton of smaller places too, as well as a ton of catering and fine dining. Unfortunately, chef (especially pastry) is a tough gig, and more about who you know (or who knows you). I would tell her to start networking. On the plus side, depending on where you're going (and what your financial situation is), she might want to start her own gig. Commercial real estate is cheap and plentiful in many areas, and it wouldn't be hard to create buzz in a small but upscale downtown about the pastry chef that came from Philly to "someplace" MI to open her shop.

We have a food truck in Lansing where the people are from Philly (Purple Carrot), and they've been on Eat Street on Cooking Channel, and they have a great local buzz, even in a smaller metro like Lansing.

Cupcakes are also all the rage in many upscale shopping areas.

Caspper69,

Thank you so much for the information. She wants to get a job at a catering business or fine dining restuarunt and then work her way up to getting her own bakery. Either way it sounds like there are plenty of opportunities for her. Other than the job situation for her Michigan really sounds amazing.

Thank you,

Rich

I don't know how far north of Detroit you're thinking of but the Traverse City area has had acclaim in various magazines for our foods. I haven't been to it yet, but I see there is a French Bistro in Traverse that has just opened. I've looked at photos of their pastry, and they look delicious. I would think your wife would do well up here.

Luzette is right on. Traverse City is a spectacular town in an amazingly beautiful area of Michigan. This town will always be a hot bed for the food industry because of its location. This is wine country, craft beer country and the tourists will always flock here. I hope to one day be lucky enough to call TC my home.
