My spouse is considering taking a job in Midland, MI. We are from the south (Ky) and we have mild winters and not much snow (maybe 12 inches total for the whole winter). Harsh winters and lots of snow is not something we are accustomed to, so moving to Midland is giving us some anxiety about the winters. Realistically, how are the winters? How much snow would we expect? How long is the winter (i.e. do you get snow in Oct-March?). Any information you can give about winters in Midland and what to expect would be much appreciated. Thanks.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midland,_Michigan#Climate

We get a little bit of everything, but it varies a lot from year to year. Until last week, the weather has been in the '50's. We had one big storm so far, but all the 3" of snow melted at Thanksgiving. Right now there is NO SNOW, and it's 45 degrees. It's not a whole lot different than Kentucky variations, just typically a bit colder, and lasts a bit longer. Expect to have to shovel snow from time to time, and you'll need to learn to drive in it. Life-long Michigan drivers learned to drive in snow very early, and it's possible to drive nearly regular speed IF you know how to. BUT, you also need to know when you should drive more carefully then, and avoid the few idiots that think they don't need to slow down.

It can last 6 months, from late October, until late April. Nothing to be scared about, but you'll have to live through a few to figure out if you can deal with them.

Even during a "harsh" winter, this area of Michigan doesn't typically get nailed like the west areas (Grand Rapids, etc Due to lake effect weather) or like Marquette in the UP.

Even here we generally don't get snow in October or even November, not that stays around anyway. We even get close to not having a white Christmas some years, probably this year will be one of those.

It's December 1st and we've only had one snowfall so far this season, and it melted away pretty quickly.

If I lived in Midland or anywhere in Mid Michigan I'd be dying to see more snow.

Thank you both for your replies. This does make me feel better. Driving in snow is something that I would have to learn and become more comfortable with since we don't get much practice with that in the south.

October? I don't know where YOU live, but where I live it's December 10th... Here we chop holes in 2 feet of ice, and THEN going swimming. But there's no ice at 57 degrees.

Can I borrow your time machine? lol

They're from Texas, I think that might be on the other side of the equator where time runs backwards.

It is so hot today. What is wrong with MI weather? I actually miss the cold but not complaining.

To the OP, yes Michigan weather is cold but its not continuously cold. You will see sun.

Ok, now seeing the Sun is another story. Michigan is overcast a large percentage of the time. That's due to being surrounded by a bunch of inland oceans, and all the odd weather it creates.

It's always glorious when we do get good bright Sun for a few hours though!
