Alright, I know that I have only been here 2 months but the craziest thing happened to me at work the other day. I women I work with was explaining to me where her parents live from her; and she put her hand up and was pointing as if her hand was a map. I have never seen anyone do this before. Is that something an people from Michigan do? Is your hand supposed to represent a map of Michigan?

Yes, Michiganders do this all the time. Michigan is shaped like a hand.

God help us, yes it is common. I do it all the time without even thinking about it. My wife used to laugh at me because of it (she is from Mass.) but I caught her doing it to one of the kids the other day to show them where we lived in relation to their Aunt and Uncle. Being the good Husband I didn't say TOO much.

Yes they always do it. Get used to it and figure out where on your hand you now live.

It's something so engrained in people from Michigan, we find ourselves doing it years after leaving Michigan, even though people ask you where you're from in Michigan and when you try to show them, they look at you like you're strange and exclaim "You're from your own hand??"

I only thought it was weird when I saw someone from the UP first hold up their right hand with the thumb out -- the usual position, but then they place their left hand above the right and then point use their right hand to point to the spot on their left hand.

not many people have the opportunity to represent their state with their own hand!
so i always do it is just natural to me!!!
I kind of assume though that the person i am showing is clueless...and say "you know how michigan is shaped like a mitten....well this is where i am from..."
that way they get what i am doing

oh yeah yeah the UP is always done with the other hand above....!

I do it all of the time, too. In our family, we have always referred to it as the "mitt map."
