My occupation is listed. To think of what I originally wanted to go to college for... journalism.

It's interesting that health care jobs such as nursing are often listed. Most hospitals in the nation are experiencing hiring freezes. So many nurses can't find jobs, yet the media keep pumping those jobs. Not only that, but fewer people are going to the hospital now, since many people have lost their health insurance, or can't pay a co-pay.

In order to go to nursing school in the first place, one has to take a battery of pre-requisites in order to get in. Since the media has pumped these jobs, there are currently about 10-20 people applying for the same available slot in virtually every nursing, (or x-ray, pharmacist et al) program in the country. Many people don't even understand all the responsibilities a nurse does. We have people whom have the personality of a "tow-truck driver" trying to get into nursing, and their too stupid to realize its not going to be the right fit.

Dont forget inventor. If you can come up with an idea that is affordable and people can use at home, your in the money! Look at the "snuggy" they have sold over 4 million of those things! I invented an affordable device for pond waterfalls, but had to give it up because the price of aluminum skyrocketed a few years ago. I was selling them like crazy! All it takes is a good thought out idea, and the will to do it.

Primary education? I don't believe that one. They're laying off teachers and those of us lucky enough to find jobs are finding them in charter and private schools. Definitely not a growing field. More like a glutted one.

They actually forgot the most famously recession proof industry ever.

Pornography. I wonder if that's going to become a lot more sought after...

Michigan for sure has a glut of Teachers, Other areas are a bit short of Teachers. Of course those areas tend to pay a lot lower wages than here, while the cost of living is usually equal to, or higher than Michigan.

I agree that not everyone is nursing material. You have to have a nuturing personality.

With that being said... I am personally seeing nurses being recruited from other states and even Canada.

While it is true that some hospitals are feeling the crunch... and yes the more lucrative and "cushy" nursing jobs maybe harder to find... but brand new grads are STILL BEING HIRED WITHOUT EXPERIENCE INTO DETROIT AREA HOSPITALS. This month; not last year.

There are so many nurses that I PERSONALLY know that are in their 60's still working full time. I can off the top of my head think of 10 that are going to retire in less than 5 years.

That is just one person's knowledge from 1 hospital, from 1 city.

We're in quite an economic trough, remember -- just because places can't afford to hire doesn't mean they don't need the help. My agency is crying out for more help -- a clinic nurse and someone from my dept. just left for jobs in another county, and the dept we stole from to replace my co-worker is in dire straits because one of their other FT people is in the hospital, so they're short two whole people with new customers pouring in. But there's no money yet to hire more.
