OK I told him that I am pretty certain is is not eligible to join but that would ask to be sure I am right because I may be wrong as my only experience is with the Air Force and that was long ago.
Here are his particulars:

1. Has HS diploma and was an average student. No extra activities in school.
2. Drove a car uninsured and was involved in an accident and because of that lost his license and must pay a $7000 civil judgment or bankrupt to get it back.
3. Plead guilty to simple battery after a fight with his brother. Was originally charged with simple battery and domestic violence and they dropped the DV charge in exchange for the plea.
4. Plead guilty to driving on a suspended license which is suspended from item number 2.
5. Used marijuana less than 5 times and none within the past year. Told him that the drug test might show the use even if it several years old but I am not sure. Advised him not to lie about it in any case.

I don't think he has a prayer of getting in. What say you?

The pot won't show if he hasn't done it in the past year - it leaves the system pretty fast. If that battery charge was a misdemeanor he could still get in the infantry depending on testing, yadda, yadda. A recruiter can tell him more - has he visited one yet?

What say you?
Times change.

Tell him to go and talk to recruiters for all the branches.

I retired from the Army in 1990. Worked with Department of Defense for 10 years after that. Still do some limited consulting over the past 10 years and deal with military at times. I am constantly amazed at some of the young people I deal with...

My recruiting skills are dated but I see at least two waivers there, you only get one. As for the idea that the Infantry is a low skill job that's a laugh. He won't be flying planes in the Air Force, so what does he think he qualifies to do?

Don't tell anyone what they are eligible or not eligible for, unless you ACTUALLY do the job...I see this happening ALL the time at work, people think that they are not eligible for things, that they actually ARE eligible for...because their NIEGHBOR told them...blah blah...

Tell the guy to see a recruiter, for the REAL information...

This one wants the Army and will take whatever MOS he can get including infantry.

I am taking both boys to the recruiters this week. I just gave my opinion not to discourage them but to let them know getting in is not as easy as it was at one time.

The kid seems to be a troublemaker from the OP post.

The Army will MAKE or BREAK him in short order.

The S**t will hit the fan in basic training whether he can cut it or not.

Been a long time since I was in the Army (1950-52).

We had a kid that broke down when scrubbing the slop cans while on KP.

Understand things are a lot different and maybe easier today...time will tell...let him sow his oats.
