I'd like to ask a question about the law enforcement agencies.
Let's say I won't be going to military (Marine Corps) for some reason.
How much harder does this make becoming an FBI/DEA agent for me?
How much DO they appreciate your participation in the military?
Does it help when you only go to Basic Training and not to Marine Corps?
Curious about that, just when something comes on my way, I'd like to know other ways as well.
FBI and DEA both have recruitment coordinators, in the same fashion as the military. Your best bet is to research all possibilities and make an informed decision based on your personal goals. Answer this, "What do you want to do?"
Full service in the military is always a advantage to a law enforcement career and that is why they give points if you have it.It has to do witrh the training you get and the self disaplend you learn.Most law enforcement has to do with team work and that is what the military teaches and the ability to think/act in very stressful situations.
But, what's the difference between FBI academy and Marine Corps Basic Training?
Can it be accepted if I'd only go to FBI Academy? Can this also teach the necessary knowledge for being part of the law enforcement and act/think in very stressful/hard situations?
Your military background will help but it isn't necessary. Aside from the physical, you'll also need a college degree and a 100% squeaky clean background. I know someone who went into this field and they interviewed his old classmates from grammar school, his former Boy Scout leader....it was unbelievable. The background is really intense. He love his job!
For the FBI a degree is mandatory, military service can be helpfull, but ultimately you must have an established and verifiable background. Competition is stiff as there are ample qualified candidates.
many recruiters sell the military as a foot in the door for the FBI or CIA...
when i was recruiting I never did that, except to say, you need a degree from a good college to compete with the guys going for those jobs, the military can help you get that degree and give you some of the basic life tools for work in some of the operational assignments in those agencies
i know they have folks who recruit for those jobs, talk to them
My neighbor just accepted a postition in the FBI. He leaves for Quantico, VA in the begining of December for a 5 month physical training session. He was a CPA before with no military training at all. He is a triathlete though. I do know he had to pass a physical test, an extensive interview and an extremely extensive backround check. We had agents come here a couple of times asking questions.

But what about my other candidate - DEA ?
I've heard that DEA training goes down in the same place as FBI.
I'd really love to get into Department of Justice, FBI would be the best for me but due to the tight competition and demands, I might choose something else.
ATF was supposed to be the hardest DOJ agency to get into, FBI has also high demands but what about the Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. Marshal Service ?
How is all the competition and rules with these two agencies ?
