Hi all So I'm just trying to collect as much information as I can before he actually joins so I can get a better perspective on what the expect. We are in our mid-20's, getting married next year, and living in New Jersey so he would be stationed at McGuire AFB. He wants to be in Security Forces since he wants to end up being a police officer. I was just wondering what kind of issues, benefits, etc. we can expect. Thank you for anything you can help me with!

I've already read all that, but I would like to know from experiences and things like that because the web site doesn't really give me any first hand information. Thank you though

Security forces are not police men... There are security forces who are E-6, E-7 who are cops and provide the onbase police, these jobs are not open to air guard and to first term airmen/women...

If he wants to be a police officer, or a federal officer learning how to conduct wire tap intercepts would serve him better than security forces.... Security forces provide base security concentrating on protection of munitions and air elements ie they guard the planes.

The biggest thing he can get out of the guard is networking, there will be other cops in the unit and they will know he is looking for a job and will provide the in for him, #2 is a active secret security clearance, which if he wants to go federal then he has a leg up.

Actually, first term Airman can do Security Forces. Security Forces are cops. They respond to shoplifting on base, kidnappings (before being handed over to higher authorities), curfew violations, drinking and driving, terrorist threats, bomb threats, traffic stops, and other such non-felonies. They don't deal with felonies or detective work, but do all other elements of law enforcements... at least that is how it works in the Air Force/Air Guard.

Thank you for your responses! He was told by a few cops in our town that he is good friends with that security forces and the air guard in general will do nothing but good for him. There's actually an officer in a neighboring town he knows that did security forces which is how he got turned on to the idea to begin with. I've been doing all the research I can and so has he, but pretty much all the useful information we got was from the air force website itself. He goes for his physical tomorrow morning so I'm extra on edge about it today, haha : ) Thanks again!

I am an Air Guard spouse myself, so feel free to shoot me a PM with any questions you have. I was active duty for four years, where I met my wife. I got out and she joined the Guard. We were both enlisted and she is now an officer so I can offer multiple perspectives.

From what I have seen, the Guard can be great for cops. There are a lot of opportunities to network and make contacts that can lead to civilian LE jobs.

I have nothing bad to say about the Air Force, and I doubt either of you will regret his decision to join the ANG.
