The VA is the benchmark for healthcare and the factors associated
with recent claims of negligence is precipitated by a lack of creative
care alternatives that has made the VA scapegoats! Too many affluent
vets have not sought at least Abvantage programs that would ease
waiting issues at typically massive outpatient burden on VA coupled
with to the "from service discharge" to the grave obligation. Aging vets
myself included have exacerbated the system via neglect of their
bodies (drugs, obesity, smoking, diet, and alcohol abuse) I include dis-
abled vets, but THEY are our hero's and must receive priority and many
cannot afford alternative insurance. Local hospitals couldn't even
comprehend how to treat disabled vets as ONLY VA has the expertise
to expedite care. My point is there are millions of qualifying vets who
are not " milking" the VA but are too lazy to seek alteratve care as
a failsafe to waiting when faced with a sudden or urgent care require-
ments taking VA for granted. Again many VA facilities see five times
as many patients as private or corporate hospitals and if one does the
math the so-called "waiting time" is a manufactured nonesense !
All health systems today (a evolving trend) has severe waiting issues.
Making a doctors appointment today is a ridiculous undertaking and
veterans are forced along with non vets to head to the ER or walk-in
clinics, but stop counting on an overtasked VA! The VA is not equiped
to be your one stop umbrella of a vets failing health 30 years from
the war zone. This rant has nothing to do with dishonoring vets, but
rather creating an approach to better meeting the needs of all vets
yet isolating vets who health care needs are not that critical and who
have access to affordable care. I signed on with Humana for example
just in case VA would be too impractical being 125 miles away! The
many local VA clinics are not havens for emergencies either. I will
head for the ER at any one of three hospitals Humana affliates with.
Younger vets and disabled vets more than likely will not qulify for
medicare alternative options so once you syphen out those who do then
VA can catch it's breath.
