The Navy is having difficulty finding qualified applicants. According to a 2017 study from the Heritage Foundation 71 percent of Americans ages 17 to 24 aren’t eligible for service in the armed forces, even if they want to join. The reasons include their inability to pass the ASVAB, pass a physical examination or pass a background investigation. DoD and other studies reflect similar numbers. In response to this the Air Force and Navy raised the maximum age to enlist to 40. I never thought of the military as second career potential but enlisting at age 40 makes this a possibility. It remains to be seen if $25K is enough to entice qualified applicants to enlist.

I suspect that not wanting to serve under Biden is a significant part of the problem.
I suspect your average E-1 to E-3 is about as apolitical as it is possible to be. I was one in the 80s. Politics were the last thing on my mind. What my squad leader thought about my room, when we were getting released that day, whether I had CQ that weekend or a field problem coming up, if I had enough money to buy beer, and whether I could get the number for that girl over there were the top of my list.

I 100% believe you about the 80's but times have changed....
Recruitment is struggling in 2022 because of the pandemic I suppose? I got a bridge to sell ya if you believe that one.
Or maybe recruitment is lagging because the young people of this nation have gotten too darned fat and aren't fit to serve? But somehow paying them 25K is going to magically fix that?
Certainly it couldn't have anything to do with that dementia patient, uh, Commander and Chief, we've got in the White House....nah, couldn't be that.

The Heritage Foundation is about as one sided politically as they get.
I call BS on their 'study'. 71% won't pass? That's crap. Do you have a link to the 'study'? Is it even vetted?

Sure, man. Privates these days are from Lake Wobegon. They’ve given up on normal military life and human behavior and are intently studying the Commander in Chief’s politics. /eyeroll

I bet that has nothing to do with anything.
