While the Midwest is never known for skiing and snowboarding we do have some really great places to ski and snowboard and I thought I would share them here after the best time to shop for ski and snowboard gear is after July! For the Milwaukee area in a day trip Alpine Valley is as good as it gets but if you don't mind driving t the 1.45 to Cascade Mountain or the 1.50 to Devils Head Resort is there for you too. For the weekends I highly recommend the 3 hour drive to Wausau and going to Rib Mountain aka Granite Peak Ski Hill. We did the Granite Peak trip several times last winter and a 3 hour drive on a Friday after is not that bad plus hotels are cheap up there.

If you're really crazy you could drive up to "The Porkies" aka Porcupine Mountain or Lutsen in Minnesota which is a 8 hour drive. If you are not a beginner but a really good skier or snowboarder you could go to the best place in the Midwest which is 6.5 hour drive in Mount Bohemia. I know spring/summer is not a time you may want to thing about skiing or snowboarding but for the SADD members here it really helps. For those who always wonder what is there to do in winter here, well cross-country skiing and snowboarding and downhill skiing are great options and just remember you don't have to go to Colorado or Utah for great mountains.

Here are some helpful links, btw if you want to go skiing or get into snowboarding don't wait until October when demand is very high and so are prices. The best time to go shopping for winter gear is end of July and end of season.

I hate to say this but our summer is almost over in 4 months! but we have great winter options here in Wisconsin. For the best in winter sports it's either Michigan or Wisconsin so at least feel good about that.

Thanks for tips man. When I was in LA you could go to the closer mountains but more experienced people would drive 5+ hours north to Mammoth Mountain. I've made that trip several times so a 3hr drive is nothing for me. I haven't snowboarded in a fews. I know summer isn't here yet but I can't wait to give it another go.

I've skied them all. Even though there are no western or eastern style drops, there are comparatively decent ski areas in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota.
