Hello everyone,

Did you know that now you can recharge your car air conditioners? Isn't that great? I bought my bottle online on Ebay. I didn't realize it was now legal in Wisconsin. I'm so glad to have air conditioning in my car now.

Hello...I bought Arctic Freeze, and it worked perfectly. The bottle was large enough for me to also recharge my mother's car as well. She's older, and I was so worried about her with all of this heat. It was so easy. It only took a few minutes. I went to Youtube to make sure that I was doing things correctly. You can go to How to Recharge Your AC with Arctic Freeze - YouTube to see how it's done.

Also, I found that it's sold at Autozone.

Why was this previously not legal?

"The powers that be" felt that recharging our own car air conditioners could be a threat to the environment. If your car is older than 1991, then it probably uses R-12 to recharge the air. This isn't sold here in Wisconsin, because it can affect the environment. You would have to go to https://vil.motor.com/HOME_FRAMESET....1947900e13ff05 to see if your car uses R-134 to recharge its system.

I'm just so glad to be able to do this now in our state. It has been a long time coming.

I'm guessing the parts stores just across state lines are bummed out about this. I felt like I was living in a dry county down south.

Recharging your own older car with R-12 has been illegal since the mid-1990s in all states I thought? R-12 is not sold anywhere off the shelf like it used to be.

Exactly, R134a sales just slumped in Northern Illinois. I don't think it was ever illegal to recharge your R134a systems in Wisconsin; they made the purchase of the refrigerant illegal in Wisconsin. Of course, a stop at any Walmart or auto parts store immediately across the border, was a different story.

Because of the *ahem* ENVIRONMENT.

We all know that had absolutely nothing to do with it, because at that time, you could still go to Walmart and buy a case of keyboard dusting cans or air horns, full of--you guessed it--R134a. The identical chemical. And those were obviously made for direct discharge into the environment. Kind of makes the environmental argument for refrigerant purchases somewhat suspect.

So basically it was just a legal racket for A/C shops. I used to have, or maybe still have (not sure if it expired) a 609 MVAC license. Even with that, buying 134a in Wisconsin, was treated like a nuclear arms purchase. But without any license, any person could buy it in IL.

The whole reason for changing from R12 to R134 was for environmental reasons.
