I like Meritage, a blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. My favorite is produced by Sumac Ridge, a winery from the British Columbian interior. If you can get your hands on it, it's not terribly expensive and it tastes like nothing else. Excellent with poultry, seafood, or on its own.
On a hot summer day when having fresh baked or grilled fish something light like an albariño is perfect. If you are just drinking and need the wine to carry your palate then I prefer a Pinot Grigio.
My preference is Sauvignon Blanc. I like SOME Chardonnays, but not the ones that taste you're chewing on an oak barrel. Riesling is too sweet for me. Sauv Blanc is light, crisp, sometimes citrusy/limey/grapefruity. Cupcake IS a good brand of Sauv Blanc! i also like Kim Crawford (Expensive!) and Nobilo, Geyser Peak.
