My wife has a real problem with companies that fly the US flag but seem oblivious to protocol. She thinks if they are really that patriotic they should show it by doing the right things. And what really irks her are these flags that, as a result of flying in all weather, are torn and weathered. You'd really think a company could afford a little bit of money to replace the flag every year or two. I'm not a fanatic for symbols, but what does it really say to have a giant flag representing country that is a rag?

Is there a local connection or some employer we should be shaming?

I think some of the flag protocol is pretty crazy, but I agree you probably should never have your flag in shambles.

It looks cool, gives the flag character.

Every business should have a Perkins sized flag.

I agree with both you and your wife. I am not a fanatic for symbols either; however, I agree that if a flag is flown it should be done so properly. I recently read that the flag is replaced with a new one every three months in Canal Park (Duluth) because of the beating it takes from the weather. That is doing the right thing.

Yeh, flags that are ripped or flown wrong are just visual ironies. "Look at me, I'm patriotic! But don't ask me to ask an employee to furl it in stormy weather or pay for a replacement. Money is the ULTIMATE patriotism!" That's the attitude that sucks. When money is all you love, then don't try to claim you are patriotic. Or better yet, idea! Buy a flag with a dollar bill on it and fly THAT! Show your real "patriotism".

I suppose you would want us to replace those flags on the moon as well?

Yeah, those moon flags are a real eyesore. Good thing you can't tell they're American flags since the fabric has been UV'd to death.

Those weren't even cloth, were they? And no rain or wind to tear them. Nope, they should be good to go.
