Hello City-Data friends. I'm hoping someone out there can help! So, my fiance and I bought our first home in June of this year. The house was a flip, and fairly well done...as far as we can tell so far. BUT, after the new paint and floor finish smells wore off...we noticed a different, bad smell. In our bedroom, in the window frame/sills and baseboards- whereever there is a crack or opening- there is a BO (body odor type smell.) It is gross, and anxiety inducing as we have NO idea what is causing it. ANY advice/ideas/etc. would be SO appreciated.

Thank you!

Well if by BO, you mean rotten eggs - RUN and call Centerpoint Energy, most likely a gas leak otherwise I would guess it's a sewer problem. If you have sluggish drains, this is most likely it - always a problem with houses as flips very rarely take care of the sewer as it's super expensive if a tree or anything is blocking the pipes. Call a plumber and see if anything is blocked.

It could be just about anything, other possibilities are dead rodents in the wall, moisture is starting to grow mold. Just google "House smells like BO" and see what you come up with.

If you don't already, get a carbon monoxide detector - carbon monoxide is odorless but better safe then sorry.

One of my coworkers noticed a strange smell in an certain area of his house. When the drywall was removed, he found that the construction workers left food in there and it got all moldly/rotten. It was a gross story.

I second the suggestion that a rodent may have crawled in somehow and died. Sometimes they burrow their way in from the attic. Have you peaked in the attic to see if the smell is coming from there?

You're probably going to have to hire a contractor to look at it and do invasive inspections. If its coming from inside the wall, drywall will probably have to be removed.

Ok- I was wondering who to even ask to look into this. So, you think a contractor would be best? And the service is called an invasive inspection? Do you by chance know of any good ones?

Well, invasive inspections just means they need to start tearing stuff apart. Cutting drywall, removing baseboard, etc. I would start by just looking in your attic yourself. If you smell something bad up there, its probably a rodent. If thats the case, any wildlife management service/pest control company can go up there and clean it up.

The other possibility is Chinese drywall...you can google it. There's a good wikipedia page. Did your flippers redo any drywall in that room? I know this was more a problem in the mid-2000s, not sure if much of it is used anymore.

If you subscribe to Angies List, you'll find a wealth of contractors and handymen that do small jobs like this. A subscription is a must-buy for any new homeowner.
