Hi. We currently live about 40 miles east of Atlanta in a semi-rural area. Our kids & grandkids live in Livingston, LA. I'm hoping to retire in about 4 months. Husband is already retired. We would like to live closer - but not TOO close - to the kids/grandkids.
Back in the 80's we lived in Slidell, LA and worked in downtown N.O. so the heat/humidity is not an issue.
My concern is cost of homeowner's insurance, auto insurance, car tags, etc. Does anyone have any insight on those subjects.

Thanks,

I have visited both of those towns in southern Miss. I was there in April, a nice time of year in the Gulf Coast. Picayune is distant suburb of NOLA. You can drive to Slidell in about 15 minutes and NOLA in less than 1 hour if there isn't much traffic. Other towns on the north shore of Lake Ponchatrain (Mandeville + Covington) are also nearby. Picayune has basic big box shopping (WalMart, Home Depot) and some supermarkets. It's also only about 30-40 minutes from some of the MS Gulf Coast towns and beaches. Not a lot of excitement in Picayune, but not far from a variety of things.

Poplarville is a county seat about 20 miles northeast of Picayune. It sits by itself with a few other small towns nearby, but you will have to do a lot more driving to get to any larger towns depending on what you might need to buy or what services you need. It's further from the Gulf so homeowners insurance will be a bit lower.
