Hello everyone, my wife and I are going to be in Merdian MS this weekend (sat-tues) and we are looking for something fun to go see/do while we are in town. What is the area known for? What are some great things to see that are not tourist traps?

Thanks!

There's a wonderful old theatre in Meridian, which has been restored. It was sealed like a time capsule, for almost a century, and so is astonishingly well-preserved. Whatever's going on there this weekend is probably going to be the highlight of your visit. It's an amazing building, and a remnant of Meridian's Golden Age.

In another thread, you mentioned a gluten-free restaurant in Jackson/Meridian. I don't know of a single one in the state. But Rainbow Health Food Co-op has its own little restaurant (lunch only, unless it's changed), and will be your best bet for gluten-free cuisine. At one point, the Co-op baked its own gluten-free bread. I don't know, though, if that is still the case. Up the hill behind the Co-op is the part of Jackson's Fondren District used in filming 'The Help'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wVu5qlN9OU If there's a 'hip' area in the state, Fondren is it.

You don't sound like State Fair types, but that is going on in Jackson, starting tomorrow. If you make it over Jackson way, the best shopping is at Jackson's Highland Village, Ridgeland's 'Renaissance' and 'Township' lifestyle centers, and along Grandview Boulevard in Madison (Nommé d'après moi, naturellement...). One of the state's few functioning (modern) movie theatres is on that thoroughfare, the Malco Grandview (They keep naming things after me... oh, stop...stop... you're making me blush...). Anyway, the Grandview was the scene of the gala international opening of 'The Help'. But mostly, I like it because it's got thirty-foot Corinthian columns at the entrance, and makes me feel special, every time I go. And up the road a tad, in not-so-safe Canton, they're making another movie on the Square. They've made lots of movies there, including A Time to Kill. Anyway, when a movie is in town, film people, including stars, can be seen all over the Jackson metro.

#grandviewgloria Thank you for your suggestions. We will be sure to check out the theater while we are in town. I had forgotten that the Help was filmed there, I think we might check that out too. Thank you very much for the help.

#southlander I will check out the website that you suggested, thanks.
