I plan to purchase a car with Rebuilt title in GA. Does anyone know the title and registration process in MS? Can I register and get a title in MS for a car that has out of state rebuilt title? Do I need to go through the inspection like they do for salvaged cars? Would getting insurance be an issue? Thanks.

You should have a certified inspection service check the car out before you buy it. They will make sure all major components on the car are legal. You can get a good title check on vinaudit.com Also it is possible to buy what looks like a clear title but it has a lien on it. I bought a truck with a "clear" title and when I went to transfer it there was a county lien for unpaid tickets. The guy had left the state so I was stuck with it. Made 2 attempts to get it straightened out and wound up junking it. I think on a salvaged title the insurance will not give you full coverage.

Thanks for the reply. I will check with vinaudit. I have checked with insurance and I will go with liability only coverage. However, did you or know anyone who has experience with registering rebuilt title car from out of state? Thanks.

No hands on experience in your state but have found differences in other ones. Years ago there were flood cars coming out west from the southeast with regular titles. Rolling back odometers was another problem. I think a couple of states don`t even have titles for older cars. After a VIN check I would contact whatever state you are bringing it to. Most state websites have good info. One other thing is there paperwork showing the damage/reason for the rebuilt title and was the work done by a licensed shop? There should be paperwork for the parts. Make sure you are legal before buying and putting any money in it. Make sure a frame and body number are a match.

Most states address rebuilt and salvage titles online.

In our state, you have to have a place of business and insurance to get a Rebuilder's license. All junk yard parts invoices have the serial number of the vehicle the components are coming from. Pictures must be taken to document what was done as the repairs are being made. All vehicles must be inspected by DMV inspectors before licenses/titles are issued.

And few auto body shops in our state even have a Rebuilder's License--if just for their personal use.
