If your purpose is to survive a SHTF scenario then you need to get away from people. Why would you want to live near a big town where most of the people are armed and know how to shoot well, but are not prepared for a SHTF scenario? Not to mention a lot of folks in poverty who are also armed and won't think twice about taking from you when their kids are starving.

Can't depend on fish and game when everyone else is out in the woods shooting everything that moves, including you if they spot you carrying away their next and only meal.

Buying a home or renting 1st then, is the next ? Maybe rent as it'd give ideas re areas to buy, yet it seems a waste of $ to even short-term rent if homes are avail now. Ok, again thx to all so far giving your help.

If home price is low enough then a cash home buy would be best. But it'd have to be tiny & thus land would be small. As long as you have a garden, maybe get chickens, etc. you could be ahead of alot of folks -- not even anywhere near thinking (let alone believing) there's even ANY need for Patriot-type retreat areas. Most folks are utterly blind to the reality & what is going on, it seems. How can you have so many educated people, so totally absent-minded or spaced out when it comes to the way things seem to be going? Unreal, huh?
I have no idea what a 'Patriot-type retreat area' means. You mean an area good for veterans?

I believe he's talking about the "Redoubt":

Nope. My impression is that very few people in North Idaho are on board with the Redoubt idea--just small enclaves of people from elsewhere, and they're generally met with skepticism by the locals. We have retirement property in NID on the MT border, and in the 12 years we've been in the area part-time we've never seen any signs of Redoubt communities or even heard rumors. But rural NID is a fabulous place to live in harmony with one's neighbors and wild nature, if one is so enclined, and one doesn't mind long, grey winters. Pretty much the same as the far NW corner of MT.

Thx again for all these replies coming.

But I still think east of Divide (tho NOT true Redoubt turf) is far cheaper land, etc. More for your $. So, search continues & even if just moving to a home there -- let alone total self-suffiency at this time -- it'd still be far better than those still stuck outside Patriot turf (which is turf only of; MT, ID, WY, & eastern OR & eastern WA states).

Keep this thread going w/ all this ideas as someone too may benefit from it somehow.
