Montreal end of December with family, planning advice! (rent, hotels)

Hi-

We are planning to visit Montreal December 27th-January 2nd with children (8, 6 & 3). We would love for them to go ice skating and tubing, any suggestions where? Also, which hotel do you think offers the best amenities for families? And lastly, would you take a train or rent a car to visit Quebec?

Ice skating indoors: Atrium (near bonaventure central train station)

Not sure about hotels in Montreal. But I would stay somewhere within walking distance to a metro (subway) station.

I would rent a car to go to Quebec City. It seems to be awash time-wise, likely cheaper and more convenient once you get there.
