I am booking a flight from nyc to montreal and will be staying there for a few months and staying to stay at a furnished apartment. I will book a hotel to stay for 1-2 nights first as i already i will be looking at 1 or 2 apartments and then decide on which one to stay at.

I'm looking at flights and i see some flights that arrive in montreal, some that around around noon some 230pm and some that arrive at around 5pm or so.

I would like to arrive around 230pm but if i do, how long does customs usually take with you? Such as the talking and the what you are here for and how long? Assuming that is not a lengthy process, then going to get your luggage would be pretty easy? Reason i ask this is b/c i read that international flight from us to canada... the luggage takes very long and ppl wait very long for it. Is this true or false? So if i arrive in montreal around 230pm, would you say customs and that should take 30 minute or 1 hour max and getting luggage should not take longer than 30 minute?

Because i done domestic flight in usa and after going through tsa, the ppl in my plane would all wait for the luggage to come but usually if you dont get there fast, it still takes a good bit of time for the luggage to arrive.

The reason why i ask this is b/c I want to arrive at the hotel early and not like at 6pm or so, so if customs and luggage takes too long, i might just take a flight that arrives to montreal at 12pm instead of 230pm. I know a cab takes around 30 minute max to a hotel.

Traveling to Canada from the USA is much faster, less questions and easier than traveling elsewhere in the world. Customs goes pretty quickly usually.

Why not take the bus? Much cheaper and better.

It really depends on how long the lines are -- what OTHER international flights are arriving at the same time as yours. Your luggage won't take long, though, don't worry about that. The lines at customs are hit or miss, but the process is quick. Take the flight that arrives at noon; that way you'll be at the hotel well before 6 PM.

Usually the process can take up to an hour depending on how many jumbo jets are landing at the same time.
You might get some extra scrutiny from the customs agents if you are single male and staying in Canada for several months. they will definitely ask you how you intend to support yourself and where you plan on staying and they'll probably want an exact date of return..

Okay i have another question. My flight actually is a connecting flight. It goes from nyc to toronto. Then there is a 2 hour plus layout before it goes to montreal. Will i be speaking to customs in canada or in montreal? Or both?
