I have read in a couple of guidebooks to Montreal, that "North Montreal" has a gang problem and should be avoided after dark. OK. Perhaps, I will not go there around 1am, but is it dangerous during the day? I do not believe it is as bad as the ghettos in the US, not during the day? Am I correct?

There aren't really any parts of Canadian cities where I would advise you not to go during the day. They may not be particularly nice areas, but you aren't in any real danger there.

Even at night you can drive through there without concern. Though I wouldn't walk alone there late at night...

As well, the area we are talking about is not that big and is far from encompassing all of the northern portion of Montreal. It's not a huge area like the South Side of Chicago or anything.

Montréal-Nord used to be its own city (now merged with Montreal) and is located roughly on either side of Boulevard Pie-IX in the northeastern part of Montreal. Near the Rivière des Prairies. And even still, not of all of Montréal-Nord is a bad area. There are many nice parts in Montréal-Nord as well. It's mostly a few streets or blocks that are problematic there.
