Hi
I may be migrating to Montreal around July/Aug, with my wife, and daughters of 7 and 10 years.
They have gone to English schools in India so far.
Can anyone please tell me what are the good public english schools there and in what areas you have to live for those? Also , are they eligible for public english schools there? I would prefer english schools with French Immersion.

thanks,
Sanjiv

Based on the information provided I doubt you'll be able to send your kids to public English schools in Montreal. Unless there is some information I am missing you'd have to send them to public French schools or pay for a private English school.

I work in a language school where many students are parents.

They usually prefer schools in NDG, Westmount, Verdun and downtown...

From the EMSB site

8. Are the parents residing in Quebec temporarily on a STUDENT or WORK AUTHORIZATION?

If yes,

Provide VALID Work or Student Authorization of parent. (If on student permit, provide Québec Acceptance Certificate [CAQ] and letter of admission from the school.)
Provide child's long version birth certificate showing parents' names (must be in English or French) and immigration papers linking the whole family.

So that will be your status - you will be in Quebec only temporarily and will not be settling here?

Not sure at this point. Won't I be on a work authorization in the beginning?
Will depned upon how well the kids get along there. Sure they will learn French in a couple of years and other parts of the culture and may be it won't be a problem for them to go to a French school thereafter.

Great. Even I would love to learn French. How long does it take to get to the level so that you can do a short casual conversation?

OK, so what your status will be is unclear.

If you're actually "immigrating" here with the intent to stay, then the school situation will be what I mentioned in my first post on here.

If you have a job lined up that you're coming to do only temporarily, then you can apply for an exception to the French school rules and get your kids into a (free) public English school.

There are (basicallly) free French classes offered to immigrants in Montreal. Most people go to them.
